DNR increases grant for Beaufort day dock

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

A new day dock in Beaufort's historic district may cost more than $100,000 to build, says City Manager Scott Dadson.

South Carolina's Dept. of Natural Resources will be giving the city a grant to construct the dock. The grant originally awarded to the city was for $27,000, but the DNR has agreed to increase that grant to $111,279.

Dadson said the total cost is just a preliminary estimate.

The city is still working the numbers and figuring out the plans for the day dock. He believes the number will change.

The city says the federal government will be matching that money at a 3-1 ratio, and the city could have more money given to them for the project - including the grant from DNR - which will lower the city's expenses.

Dadson said the city is currently interviewing several construction companies for the project. No date yet on when construction is set to start, but this plan is a part of the city's Civic Master Plan.

He said the new day dock should last for at least 30 years.
