Sex offenders report to jail on Halloween

Posted: Updated:

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office is rounding up all the sex offenders on probation, requiring them to come to the jail during prime trick-or-treating hours.

Law enforcement officials are trying to ease the minds of parents and keep children safe.

Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie says it's all about being proactive and making sure the children are safe while they go door-to-door.

From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. only the sex offenders that are on probation will be required to report to the Effingham County Jail. The sheriff's office has been doing this for nearly five years with the help of probation officers and the sex offender registrar office.

Tonight, the sheriff's office is expecting nearly 50 sex offenders to report as part of their probation. They will not be allowed to bring magazines, books or computers.

The sheriff says this is just a way to protect both the children and the sex offenders.

"We look at it two ways. One is they cannot be accused of something they are not doing if they are at our office so it's for their protection," said Sheriff McDuffie. "Number two if there is a temptation for them to do something to someone, they are at our office and that temptation is not there."

These are only people who are currently on probation, that's how they are able to require them to report, which means there are some registered offenders that do not have to report.

If you have concerns about which house your child should go to you can search the sex offender registry on the Effingham County Sheriff's Office website at
