Clinic helps seniors register for Medicare

METTER, GA (WTOC) -

Mary George echoed the sentiment of many older Americans.

"I don't mess with anything online!" she said emphatically. "I either handle it over the phone or go to the office in person."

Many Candler County seniors who share that frustration made their way to the Metter Community Center Thursday for some cyber assistance.

A mobile computer lab from Fort Valley State University sat outside and representatives from Georgia Cares, Georgia Legal Services and several other agencies helped them pick the prescription drug insurance plan that's best for them under Medicare Part D.

"They need to find the plan that works best for them based on the medicines they need," explained Evelyn Gay, one of the organizers. "Some plans may have a higher premium but a lower co-pay and other differences.

A group of business students from Metter High School help the seniors navigate the web page, while professionals were standing by for any questions.

The 2014 open enrollment for Part D continues until December 7.

Organizers have other registration clinics planned next week. The first is at the Armstrong Center on Abercorn Street in Savannah November 6 from 10am-2pm.
