Safety meeting scheduled for Jasper County School District

A gang fight at Ridgeland-Hardeeville High School has quite a few parents nervous about the safety of their children.

That is why the district has scheduled a safety meeting for next Tuesday.

Some parents say the schools in the district are becoming dangerous. However, the district says they're extremely safe.

"We are confident that our schools are completely safe," said Shellie Murdaugh, a spokesperson for the district.

Murdaugh says safety is the number one priority.

"There is a concern, because we did have an incident. However, that incident was taken care of immediately," said Murdaugh.

The incident was a gang related brawl involving at least nine students at the high school, according to the sheriff's office.

Nine of them were arrested.

Parents questioned the way the district handled the incident.

District officials say they used their automatic call service to notify parents, and the school's Resource Officers responded to the incident within minutes.

"We want our parents to know that we do handle things immediately, and explain to them the safety measures that are taken to ensure that something like this won't happen again," said Murdaugh.

Each school is staffed with a resource officer and cameras, and the staff has gone through training to prepare them for an emergency, according to Murdaugh.

"The district, the school board, and the superintendent all care about the students," she said. "They want the best for these students."

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m, at Ridgeland-Hardeeville High School.
