SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Thursday was a big day for students studying welding and aircraft technology at Savannah Technical College.

The United Way selected the school to receive a $290,000 grant.

The money will be used to support duel curriculum, helping students get both a high school diploma and a GED. The hope is to provide students with the education and work related skill-set they need to positively change their lives.

The plan will directly address the problem of under-employed and unemployed individuals - and hopefully set an example for other to follow.

"We see this as a model going forward that could inform maybe funding incentives taken by United Way and maybe other community organizations around town; and also giving a hope to people and families that don't have a bread winner with a high school diploma or a GED," said Jeff Cole, United Way Board Chair.

Their goal is to have 50 students get jobs when they're done with their studies at Savannah Tech.
