Savannah Fire presents new plan to city council

Savannah Fire presented a new protection plan to the city council Thursday, hoping to keep up with new insurance service office standards.

As of July 1, the ISO rating is now based on staff response to a finre, including how many people respond to a fire and how fast the department can get there.

Previously the ratings were primarily based on the distance from the station to a house.

Chief Middleton says they plan to hire 25 new firefighters over the next three years to ensure sufficient crews to meet the standards.

The new standard is expected to save the city close to $9 million because they won't have to build as many new stations to meet the previous distance criteria.
