JASPER CO., SC (WTOC) -

The Jasper County Coroner has released the names of two women killed in a head-on collision Wednesday on US 17 near the Back River Bridge.

Tonya Bergelt, 35, of Bluffton, and Rebecca Pirkle, 32, of Savannah, died in the wreck that occurred at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on the other side of the Talmadge Bridge, less than half-mile north of the Back River Bridge. The road was closed for more than three hours but has since reopened.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said Tonya Bergelt was driving a white Lincoln heading northbound when she swerved into the southbound lane, striking gray sedan head-on driven by Pirkle. She is originally from Alabama and recently moved to Garden City.

Firefighters had to extricate both women from their vehicles.

Pirkle was declared dead at the scene. Bergelt was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah where she later died.
