Investigation continues into self-inflicted gunshot during standoff

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

An investigation continues into why a Savannah man decided to shoot himself instead of surrendering to Savannah-Chatham Metro police following a standoff.

Metro officers, SWAT team members and Crisis Intervention Team negotiators had surrounded Spann's residence in a two-apartment house in the 700 block of East Gwinnett St. after being called by a relative who lives in the other apartment around 9 p.m. Saturday. Police were advised he was in his apartment with a rifle.

According to police, negotiators had convinced Spann to exit the house and surrender, but heard a shot before he walked out and discovered he had shot himself.

Spann was last listed in critical but stable condition at Memorial University Medical Center.

SCMPD Violent Crimes detectives continue to investigate.
