Statesboro club: 'Shooting didn't happen here'

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

As police look for information in a deadly shooting early Sunday morning, someone connected to a Statesboro night club stressed the shooting did not occur at their establishment.

A man who did not wish to be identified told WTOC Monday the shooting occured on the opposite of Fred's Dollar store from the PrimeTime Lounge around 2:30 am Sunday. However, he said, one of the victims ran across the parking lot to the club to seek help.

He asserted neither of the shooting victims had been in the club and any trouble started elsewhere.

Statesboro police say 25-year-old Johnnie Benton of Rincon died from gunshot wounds. Witnesses found Jamal Heard, 21, and also of Rincon, shot inside a car in the Fred's parking lot.

Crews treated Heard and later carried him to a Savannah hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

Police urge anyone with information on the shooting to contact the Investigation Bureau of the Statesboro Police Department at (912)764-9911. In addition, they can anonymously submit information at www.tipsoft.com or text a tip to "TIPSSPD" plus your message to 274637 (CRIMES).
