BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -  A new organization that helps control the local pet population is off to a terrific start!

Fix-A-Friend is a new spay/neuter clinic in Brunswick County.

It just opened in August and they recently completed their 1,000th surgery!

Clinic director, Jo E. Needham attributes the early success of the clinic to the fact that the community really wants to control the pet population.

"It's unbelievable," said Needham. "It's so wonderful that so many people are so enthusiastic about coming and want to get their pets spayed or neutered. Words just can't describe it."

Last year, the Brunswick County Animal Shelter had one of the highest kill rates in the state.

Fix-A-Friend is open Monday through Friday and is located on Highway 17 in the Winnabow area.
