YEMASSEE, SC (WTOC) -

After 16 years, the town of Yemassee has a new mayor.

It was standing room only at Tuesday night's regular town hall meeting as newly elected mayor Jerry Cook was sworn in.

Cook defeated incumbent J.L. Goodwin in the Nov. 5, 2013 general election, 221-184.

The new mayor says he will unite the town's people, resolve the post office dilemma and provide better quality of life in Yemassee.

"It's an unbelievable feeling, I want it to last forever but I got a lot of work to do. I got to get out and work for the citizens in this community, they have a lot of faith in me, a lot of prayers, we're going to get us in the right direction," said Cook.

Two new councilmembers were also sworn in Tuesday night, Jordan Jinks and Daniel Anderson, who are replacing Michelle Hagan and Alton Searson.
