HHI Town Council discusses new USC campus locations

Posted: Updated:
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

It was standing room only at Hilton Head Island's town council meeting, as council members discussed plans to build a University of South Carolina-Beaufort campus in the town's Coligny area.

Almost everyone who attended the meeting agreed;  they want USCB on the Island, but some don't want it in the Coligny area.

The town has tried to get the university on the Island for many years, but plans have constantly been shot down. One of the reasons for that is location, an issue that many Coligny residents now have.

"It's not that we don't want it. We just don't think it's the right place, not in our community," said Glennda Harralson.

Town Manager Steve Riley said it could cost more than $30 million to build the school.

The Hilton Head Island campus would only be for the school's hospitality management program. Only juniors and seniors will go to that campus.

Chancellor Jane Upshaw said that may change in the future, if there's growth opportunity.

Upshaw said she's thrilled that folks want the school on the Island, but with the opposition to the Coligny area, she agrees that maybe the council should look for another site.

"I think that what we need is a win/win location," Upshaw said. "I am very reticent about the fact that there is so much opposition by the people who live in the Coligny area to want to go against that grain."

The council didn't vote on the proposals Tuesday. They say they're going to look at other possible locations before making a vote.
