This morning, a man driving down a road in Bryan County found a man's body out in the woods. The GBI and Bryan County sheriff's deputies are investigating. They've been on the scene all day, and right now they are treating this case as a homicide.
The body was found around 8am this morning about a mile off Highway 204 in Ellabell.
"Dispatch sent our officers down here, the call was there was a body in the woods," said Sheriff Clyde Smith. "Our officers located it, roped off the scene and called GBI and just started the investigation at this time."
They don't know who the man is, how he died, or why. "There's not many people to see anything here, pretty much desolate territory," said Sheriff Smith.
When investigators arrived, they started by searching for footprints or tire tracks. Then they combed the woods for clues.
A man who lives not too far from the scene found the body. He was driving along the road and saw a foot sticking out of the woods. He knew something was wrong. First he called police, then he told his neighbor, Linda Tune.
"It scared me to death," she said, who told us this kind of thing doesn't happen very often. "No that's why I live out here, that's why I moved from Savannah, for peace and quiet."
Tune says she's not going to feel safe until police get to the bottom of this. Investigators are still trying to identify the body. All they know now is it is a black male, and it appears he hasn't been there long.
They sent the body to the crime lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.
