Identity of murdered OIB man released

ANSON COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man from Ocean Isle Beach was reportedly shot and killed in Anson County Wednesday night.

Deputies with the Anson County Sheriff's Office were called around 8:30 p.m. to respond to a car in a ditch along U.S. Highway 742.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies found a man who had an apparent gunshot wound to the chest outside the vehicle when they arrived on scene.

Officials said the victim was Keith Jerome Whisnant, 42 of Ocean Isle Beach. He was driving a 2000 silver Ford Focus with OIB on the front tag.

Investigators believe the Whisnant picked up a passenger at some point on his trip. According to officials, a passing driver said he saw what appeared to be two people struggling in the front seat of the car as it set in the ditch.

The sheriff's office said there was no sign of a second person at the scene when deputies arrived or if the subject was picked up by a passing vehicle.
