CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – The votes have been recounted in the Carolina Beach mayoral election, and the results remain the same. Dan Wilcox will be the next mayor.

Incumbent Mayor Bob Lewis was not at the recount Friday morning, despite having made the request.

Wilcox, who was up by seven votes at canvass, did attend the recount at the New Hanover County Board of Elections.

The board of elections chair asked if anyone was in attendance to represent Lewis, but no one spoke up.

Wilcox served one term as a council member from 2007 to 2011. After that, Wilcox lost a bid for mayor to Ray Rothrock, who resigned from office about a year later.

Before his time as an elected leader, Wilcox organized volunteers to improve the town's boardwalk area with the appropriately named Boardwalk Makeover Group.

Wilcox will have to handle on-going issues facing the town of Carolina Beach like flood insurance because of the Biggerts-Waters Act and beach renourisnment as a coastal community.

"We've got a new town manager, a new police chief, new department heads, three new people coming on council. I think it's important that we get that organizational (aspect) up and running as quick as possible," Wilcox said.
