Vidalia man arrested in connection with fatal shooting

A Vidalia man is in custody in connection with a fatal shooting.

Police said and killing his estranged girlfriend's mother at their home on Glaze Street.

Investigators were called just after 7 a.m. on a report of a domestic dispute at the home.

Police said they found the man hiding under the garage when they arrived.

Nearly an hour later, police were called back out to the house on Glaze Street and that is when they found  66-year-old Gladys Bailey had been shot and killed. Family and friends say Bailey was a sweet woman who was taking care of her foster child named Melissa.

Witnesses said the suspect has been stalking Melissa since last night and would not leave them alone. That is when the daughter called her mom to return back to the home as the suspect was hanging outside this morning.

Witnesses said the suspect broke the front window to get inside of the home while the daughter jumped out the back window. At some point witnesses say the mother was shot in the back.

Family and friends say Bailey was a very sweet woman who knew no stranger and she'll be greatly missed.

Vidalia police continue to investigate. So far they have not released the name of the suspect or any additional charges.
