Dawson residents supporting investigation efforts

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

People in Dawson say they're glad investigators are reaching out to the community, hoping to solve the shooting of the city's mayor. Investigators set up a road check Thursday night.

Dawson residents say they want investigators to do all they can to solve the crime that shocked the city.

People in Dawson hope whoever shot Mayor Christopher Wright is found soon. His family says support for the mayor is overwhelming and people are standing behind him.

"The city is showing a lot of support, the majority of the city. Everyone is very concerned about my grandchild and everybody is hoping and praying that all will be well with him and that he will come back to being the Mayor soon," said Janie Wright, Grandmother of Mayor Christopher Wright.

GBI Agents along with other officers from Dawson and Terrell County set up a road check Thursday night looking for tips on the October 31st ambush at Mayor Wright's home. GBI Agents say the road check was in a 4 block radius of the mayor's home.

"I think that might help. I hope so anyway. I hope they get whoever did that violent crime to such a young person, anybody really," said Margie Hill.

GBI Agents say people they talked to Thursday night were glad they set up the road check.  Right now, they are not saying if it gave them any leads.

"They're doing all they can, but they are not talking but then they are not supposed to," said Janie Wright, Grandmother of Mayor Christopher Wright.

GBI Agents says they stayed in the scene until about midnight, passing out contact cards. People are anxious to have the case solved.

"It's kind of scary about who could actually do it you know and why," said Tonya Taylor.

While investigators are working the case, Mayor Wright's grandmother says is sending a message to the family.

"I just want to say to my family, the Wright family to hang in there, be strong as you've had been and a special hang in there for my grandson, Chris Wright, I love you," said Janie Wright.

Mayor Wright was initially in critical condition, but for safety reasons, family members are not saying his condition at this time.

GBI Agents says they don't know if they are going to have another road check in the future. They says it all depends on the investigation.

There will be a motorcycle benefit ride for Mayor Christopher Wright Saturday starting at the McDonalds near Albany Mall at 11.
