CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Parents got to voice their opinions Tuesday night on a proposal to close Port Wentworth Elementary School.

The Chatham County School Board is floating a plan to combat overcrowding by moving students from Port Wentworth Elementary, Godley Station K-8 and Mercer Middle School to Port Wentworth Elementary School for one year, while the system builds a new school in Northern Port Wentworth.

"We have seen student enrollment increase of about an average of 500 students every school year for the entire school district," schools spokesman Kurt Hetager said. "We see much of that come in to the western Chatham County area."

The school board will hold another meeting on the proposal Thursday at 6 p.m. at Mercer Middle School. A final decision is not expected until next month.
