SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Dept. is putting more patrol officers on busy streets in business parking lots and near stores to crack down on crimes over the holiday season.

The annual effort aims to cut down on the increase in crime before the holidays by intensifying patrols in places where shoppers are most vulnerable, according to the department.

Officers will be on the alert for auto break-ins, shoplifting and to prevent the robbing of shoppers. Officers will be working overtime and detectives will be in plain clothes to work areas where thieves are most likely to hit.

"We know that crime increases around the holidays and we will be doing our part to add security wherever and whenever  we can, " said Interim Police Chief Julie Tolbert in a statement. "But the ultimate security would be collaboration between our officers, the stores and the shoppers we are all trying to protect."

Most precincts already have engaged the expanded hours that have helped reduce crime in the past few years. The patrols will intensify as the holidays near.

Police remind shoppers to park in well-lit areas, avoid leaving items in plain view in their cars, to shop in groups and to be aware and report suspicious activity.
