Leaders discuss legislative agenda

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The blueprints for the 2014 State and Federal legislative agendas were mapped out for much of Chatham County Thursday.

Nearly 300 of Savannah's City leaders got together with a prioritized list of how state leaders can help Savannah during the "Eggs and Issues" forum.

On the agenda was the Savannah Harbor expansion project. The Ports Authority is throwing their support behind Gov. Nathan Deal and his request for nearly $35 million in federal funding to put towards the deepening of the harbor.

Healthcare was also a big topic since Memorial Health Medical Center is a level one trauma center, officials are asking for more federal dollars so the hospital can build a better trauma network.

"We understand how important it is that we have those services available for our citizens," said Sen. Buddy Carter, District 1. "We just have to make sure that, that remains a priority and make sure that in the budget process, if we have the ability, that we can fund those types of things."

They also talked about a tax on aviation parts, tourism on Tybee Island and capital projects at Savannah State University and Savannah Tech University. All of these topics will be presented to state leaders in Atlanta in January.
