Nearly 40 percent of those surveyed plan to travel and 50 percent plan to spend more over their Thanksgiving Day travel period than last year, according to data from TripAdvisor.

The travel website released survey results this week of more than 1,200 U.S. Respondents. Data show 39 percent plan to travel for Thanksgiving this year, that's up 7 percentage points from 2012.  Among those traveling,  37 percent plan to fly to their destination and 57 percent plan to drive there.

The survey also showed that travelers plan to spend more over the holiday period than last year. Forty-six percent of travelers plan to spend more on Thanksgiving travel, but 44 percent say they spend the same amount.

TripAdvisor's survey found that 14 percent plan on spending more than $3,000 over the holiday; 21 percent plan to spend $1,000-$2,999; 23 percent plan to spend $500-$999.
