More than $8 million raised for United Way

The United Way of the Coastal Empire gave thanks on Friday, raising millions after just a few months of fundraising.

The Victory Celebration took place at the Savannah River Marriott and showed how their campaign helped them reach their goal.

"Be the Power of Your Community" was the theme of this year's campaign. Hundreds of people came out after United Way surpassed their goal of raising more than $8 million.

A Power Ranger's theme campaign encouraged people to get on board with having power in the community.

Volunteers, donors, supporters and many non-profits crowded the room all waiting to hear the final total. Lots of people held signs saying thank you, giving thanks to all the supporters and those that wrote the checks.

The United Way has more than ten different divisions in the Savannah area that help raise money from organizations in law enforcement, retailers, corporations and even education.

The audience was anxious for that final number of $8,731,900, just surpassing their goal.

"Today is a great opportunity for us to celebrate what a generous community we have, not just people who are willing to give money but the people who are willing to volunteer hours and hours to help other people," said United Way Chair Dale Holloway.

"We are excited to celebrate all of the good work that the community has done to reinvest into United Way that takes the time to invest into our organization," said Liz Longshore Stephens with Med Bank Foundation Inc. "We can turn every dollar that is donated through United Way into three hundred dollars in free medication to those who have nowhere else to turn to get it."

United Way exceeded their goal by more than $50,000 and all of the money that was raised will now go back into the community.
