Catholic parishioners honored with Bishop Gartland Awards

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Catholic Diocese of Savannah honored its most faithful on Sunday at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

53 parishioners from around the diocese were recognized for their service with Bishop Gartland Awards.  

The award is named for Francis Gartland, the first Bishop of Savannah, who gave his life ministering to Savannah's people during the Yellow Fever Epidemic.

Recipients of the award included 21 Savannahians, and others coming from the other 89 counties in the Diocese of Savannah.

"The award, known as the Gartland award, has become the highest and most prestigious award that the Diocese bestows.  This Gartland Award is the be given by the Bishop to the faithful; who upon recommendation and nomination from their pastor are so honored." said Bishop Gregory Hartmeyer.

The Gartland award is given annually on the last Sunday of November.
