Gaston, Barnard now a four-way intersection

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

An intersection in the Historic District of downtown Savannah is now a four-way stop. Based on viewer concerns, the city's Traffic Engineering dept. conducted a study to see if the intersection of Gaston and Barnard streets need a four way; it was controlled by stop signs for Gaston Street only.

The new signs almost didn't happen.

Results of the traffic study indicated that the number of vehicles per hour for eight hours during a typical weekday did not meet the warrant conditions set forth in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for multi-way stop sign control. However, there were six reported right-angle collisions in a 12-month period at the intersection.

This number of collisions exceeds the minimum number of five collisions warranted for a multi-way stop at this intersection as set forth in the MUTCD.
