Tips to prevent enormous heating bills this winter

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

Cold weather means heating up the house, and there are some simple steps homeowners can take to help cut down on heating costs.

-Set your thermostat at 68 degrees. Each degree above 68 can significantly increase your heating bill.

-Programmable thermostats can automatically lower the temperature below 68 degrees overnight or while no one is home.

-Make sure doors and windows are properly sealed and weather stripped.

-Check air filters. Dirty filters increase energy usage and can damage heating systems.

-Open curtains on sunny days to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home. Close them at night to reduce chill or drafts.

Even though winter is just weeks away, SCE&G says it's never too late for customers to enroll in the company's budget billing program. The program can help customers avouid fluctuations in their bills.

Based on a home's usage history, SCE&G will estimate bills for 12 months and spread that amount into 12 equal payments.
