SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A Talahi Island woman charged with covering up the 2012 death of her husband along with her teenage son entered a plea deal in court Monday.

Judith Phelps entered into a negotiated guilty plea deal with the state. She pleaded guilty to one count of providing false statements, one count of criminal solicitation to conceal the death of another person, and one count of concealing the death of another person.

Richard Root, a longtime friend of Thomas Phelps, traveled all the way from Michigan to attend the trial.

"I'm glad its over. I still think about it an awful lot, because I wonder what Thom went through," said Root.

"I didn't know how badly Judy would try to get out of any responsibility in this thing, and I know the connection she had with her son was unbelievable. Thom told me about it all the time."

"He stayed in that office he had in the garage most of the time when I was down here visiting. He just didn't care to be around his own son," said Root.

16-year-old Preston Phelps also entered into a negotiated plea deal with the state last week. Investigators say Preston Phelps stabbed and beat his father to death and then used an axe and a blow torch to dispose of the body. His mother was accused of trying to cover it all up.

Judith Phelps will serve 12 years of a 15 year sentence. The remaining years will be spent on probation.
