Mother pleads guilty to death of baby found in trash can

A Savannah woman accused of killing her baby found in a trash can by a garbage crew in 2011, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge on Tuesday.

The malice murder charge brought against Anitra Hicks will be reduced to voluntary manslaughter. Hicks is also pleading guilty to concealing a death. The other charges in the case will not be prosecuted.

The prosecution says after giving birth, Hicks wrapped the baby in garbage bags and hid it in the backyard until the next morning when she put it in her family's trash can for the garbage truck to pick up. One of the sanitation workers discovered the child in the back of the truck when the compactor got stuck.

Earlier this year, Hicks was sent to jail for breaking the conditions of her bond by talking to witnesses, and she was pregnant again. Hicks delivered her baby in September.

The plea agreement is open-ended, meaning no sentence has been handed down yet. The judge could sentence her to between one and 30-years under the plea agreement.
