Thieves try to take ATM, fail

Posted: Updated:
BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

It was 3:26 a.m on a quiet Monday morning in Bluffton when two brazen men bulldozed their way through the Parker's convenience store on Evans Way, looking for one thing.

"The ATM, which is secured," said the Cheif Operating Officer for Parkers, Amy Lane.

Even if the men would have gotten away with the ATM, they would have been very upset, because all of the money is taken out at the end of the night, according to employees.

"It just doesn't work," said Lane. "It doesn't pay off. You can't get the money."

Clearly the crooks didn't know that. In the surveillience video the driver is seen trying to get the van out of the store, as the passenger struggles with the machine, pulling and shaking it.

Ultimately it was an epic fail, and after five minutes, they left empty handed. The mess they made will cost thousands of dollars to fix.

The store was closed all morning because of the damage. For regular Chris Mullis, it was an unexpected inconvience.

"I was on my way to bible study and I was driving by and saw this and I'm like, I can't get my Mello Yellow," she said.

The store reopened around 1 p.m., and it was back to business as crews worked to get a temporary door up.

"Of course we're not back to normal, but everything is up and running and it's safe for our customers," said Lane.

Police are still looking for the suspects, and they're asking anyone with information to call crimestoppers at 1.888.CRIME.SC.
