BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

In the Lowcountry, folks in Beaufort got the chance to meet one on one with elected officials Tuesday night and hear firsthand about what they've been working on.

It was a full house at the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce's annual Legislative Reception.

The panel included three State Senators—Chip Campsen, Tom Davis and Clementa Pinckney –who were joined by State Representatives Shannon Erickson and Kenneth Hodges.

The questions covered a wide variety of topics including the Jasper County port, teacher evaluation standards and lowering the industrial property tax from 10.5% down to 6% for economic development.

"What that says to me is that our businesses in Beaufort county are diverse and that is what our strength is in Beaufort County, we don't have a huge, major ‘megladon' of business, we have all of these great small businesses that combine into this incredible place, we are the golden goose, we have the best environment in the world," said Shannon Erickson, State Representative for District 124.

The Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce also launched its 2014 legislative agenda.

Among its top ten priorities are maintaining support for the military installations and continuing STEM-related programs in Beaufort County schools.
