Debate sparks at Brooklet Elementary

BROOKLET, GA (WTOC) -

A controversy over Christmas in the schools has sparked in Bulloch County. Some are making it a debate over religious freedom, but it's actually something completely different.

More details have come out on the debate over religious expression in Bulloch County classrooms. WTOC has learned that it actually had nothing to do with religion to begin with.

Every year around Christmas time, teachers at Brooklet Elementary School post pictures of their families on a bulletin board by the lobby. But this year, one of those teachers asked the principal to move the board to a more private area like the teacher's lounge because she did not feel comfortable showing pictures of her family to strangers.

"It seems there's almost an external attempt to spread misinformation and terrorize the school system," said Superintendent Charles Wilson, Bulloch County Schools.

"I know this is a sensitive subject and I think a lot of people will take and grab hold of what they can and unfortunately they've taken this and twisted it," says Becky Petkewich, teacher at Brooklet Elementary.

A petition group plans to address the board at a scheduled meeting on Thursday, with Superintendent Wilson and the school board attending.

It turns out the 7 a.m. prayer rally set to take place Wednesday at Brooklet Elementary School was cancelled at the last minute.
