A Spanish teacher at H.E. McCracken Middle School appeared in bond court Wednesday morning in connection with the assault of a student.
Bluffton police said Lester Eduardo Lara turned himself in on Tuesday. He's charged with third-degree battery and simple assault.
Police said that on Tuesday Lara went up to a 14-year-old student who either wasn't in his correct seat or paying attention to the lesson and tried to take the school issued iPad from him.
The student pulled away from Lara and asked "what the f**k are you doing?", and that's when the teacher hit the student on the back with a leather pouch the he was holding and using during the class, according to police. Witnesses told police the student was slapped three to four times. The student then pushed Lara and ran to the front office to call his parents.
The incident shocked parents.
"It's just not right," said parent, Steve Sandgren. "they're older kids. I mean it's just not right."
Police said the School Resource Officer who investigated the incident saw light red marks on the student's back.
Lara was granted an O.R. bond.
