SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

For many people, this time of year can be a very expensive one.

From holiday parties to presents, travel to decorations, all of the costs associated with the most wonderful time of the year can really add up.

The National Retail Federation predicts the average shopper will spend more than $500 on holiday gifts in 2013.

If you want to make sure you don't spend beyond your means, Paul Golden with the National Endowment for Financial Education has these tips:

1) Make a plan and stick to it. Set a budget early for holiday spending.

2) Resist the urge to shop for yourself.

3) Pay for everything with cash, as opposed to relying on credit cards.
