SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

For the second year in a row, Mayor Edna Jackson is showing her support to the education community. Jackson held the second annual Mayor's Breakfast Monday morning at the Desoto Hilton in downtown Savannah to help raise money for the United Negro College Fund.

Funds raised at the event will go towards scholarships to help minority students continue with their education or help them embark on a degree.

Keynote speaker Dr. Carleton Brown, President of Clark Atlanta University, says there is still a huge need for these types of funds.

"The need is very, very deep. The majority of students that attend UNCF institutions are first generation college students. And with all the changes that the federal government had made with the Pell Grant and the Parent Plus Loan and other factors it becomes that much more difficult for them to sustain an education anywhere," said Brown.

The UNCF is going into it's 70th year and has become the oldest and largest provider of minority scholarship funding. The Organization has partnerships with 37 colleges to date.
