WTOC Senior Active: Bill Murdock

You always see him coming, but Bill Murdock didn't buy his car for its looks.

"I worked for Pratt and Whitney,'' Murdoch said of the maker of air craft engines.

So the physics major who spent his career in aviation mechanics is more interested in the workings of his fifth Corvette, the 1989 model he has owned for 21 years.

"It's probably the best American car, considering the advanced materials and the engine design,'' said Murdock. "It's pretty much right up there with almost anything else in the world.''

Every once in a while, the member of the Savannah Corvette Club gets to drive his pride and joy to a place where he has re-discovered both,  the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum, where Murdock volunteers as a tour guide and a docent in the Mission Experience exhibit.

"It's really good for the kids,'' he said of the museum, "I really enjoy having the kids come through. I try to convince the teachers to spend more time discussing World War II. Less frequently, I conduct a class called the Science of Flight for special groups on how airplanes fly and how engines work. And that's a lot of fun too.''

But, admittedly, not as much fun as Murdock has getting behind the wheel of a Corvette, which was his first car, the kind he's owned most of his driving life and the kind he plans to keep driving.

"It's the straight line performance and the handling going through winding roads, twisting mountain roads,'' said Murdock. "It's just a great experience. Maybe one day, I'll hit the lottery and be able to buy a new one.''
