Investigation continues into Georgetown apt. fire

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Southside Fire Dept. is still waiting on an official report from the State Fire Marshal's Office on the cause of a blaze that destroyed six apartments at a Georgetown complex last week.

The fire on Dec. 4 put six adults and four children out their homes at the Crown Villa apartments on King George Boulevard.

A tenant discovered the fire at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and called 911.

Southside Asst. Chief High Futrell told WTOC they're still waiting on official word from state fire investigators, but early indications suggest that there was an overheating in the structure over a period of years that deteriorated the wood - causing it to get too dry and eventually caught fire inside the wall. However, those are preliminary findings until the state's official report is released.

Firefighters at the time said the blaze had been smoldering in the walls and attic of the apartment building for at least an hour before tenants knew anything was wrong.

Several fire crews arrived just as the roof collapsed. It took about 50 firefighters about a half hour just to get the blaze under control.
