Effingham BOE compromises on calendar

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Effingham County School System academic calendar for next year is up for approval, but it's been a battle between the school system and parents.

Voting on a next year's school calendar is nothing new, but this time the school system and parents couldn't agree on when to have spring break.

Superintendent Randy Shearouse says every year they post calendar options on their website for teachers and parents to vote, but this year came as a surprise.

The schools and parents were adamant about two different calendars. It all boiled down to when spring break would be.  The parents wanted it to be the week after Easter, but the schools wanted it to be the week before.

The biggest reason? Teachers wanted more time after spring break to prepare for the CRCT.

The superintendent says after nearly 900 people weighed in on the survey, they are going with the majority and having spring break after Easter. This still gives teachers and students a week back at school before testing.

"We always try to take suggestions from everyone and what they want in the calendar, but you can't come up with the perfect calendar," said Shearouse.

He says one of the other major requests from parents was starting school after Labor Day, but he says that also runs into problems for CRCT testing.

One parent who has two children in Effingham County Schools says she can't believe some parents are worried so far in advance; she's always been very pleased with the schedule.

"It's so far ahead, I haven't even gotten to that point yet," said parent Cassandra McKine. "I've got so much going on between now and then and haven't even thought about the schedule"

The superintendent will present the schedule to the school board on Wednesday which they will then vote on.
