Effingham County BOE approves 2014-2015 school calendar

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Effingham County Schools have a 2014-2015 calendar in place after a little bit of controversy.

There was a difference in opinion on whether to have spring break before or after Easter. Faculty and the board were happy to compromise with parents.

Teachers wanted spring break before Easter to give students more time to prepare for CRCT exams, but after a survey of the public and faculty, a majority wanted the break after Easter.

The school board decided to go with the popular vote, which still gives teachers a week with students before testing begins. Superintendent Randy Shearouse says everyone is satisfied.

"We just wanted a little time to review. A little bit of time to get ready for the test. You can imagine having to teach a student after they have been on break and out of school for a little bit of time, traveling and  they come back. They are not ready to take a test by the time they come back. So, they like that time to help get them back in the mode of school and back in the test taking form they need to be in for CRCTs," Shearouse told WTOC. "We feel like this is a good calendar. We do."

Another date that will remain a day off is St. Patrick's Day. Several years ago, the district did not take it off and saw low attendance because of the celebration in Savannah. So, once again, it will be a holiday in 2014-2015.
