Effingham County BOE approves 2014-2015 school calendar
EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -
Effingham County Schools have a 2014-2015 calendar in place after a little
bit of controversy.
There was a difference in opinion on whether to have spring break before or
after Easter. Faculty and the board were happy to compromise with parents.
Teachers wanted spring break before Easter to give students more time to
prepare for CRCT exams, but after a survey of the public and faculty, a
majority wanted the break after Easter.
The school board decided to go with the popular vote, which still gives teachers
a week with students before testing begins. Superintendent Randy Shearouse says
everyone is satisfied.
"We just wanted a little time to review. A little bit of time to get
ready for the test. You can imagine having to teach a student after they have
been on break and out of school for a little bit of time, traveling and
they come back. They are not ready to take a test by the time they come
back.So, they like that time to help get them back in the mode of school and
back in the test taking form they need to be in for CRCTs," Shearouse told
WTOC. "We feel like this is a good calendar. We do."
Another date that will remain a day off is St. Patrick's Day. Several years
ago, the district did not take it off and saw low attendance because of the
