SCPSS holds last meeting before new zones are drawn

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Wednesday was the last day parents could bring their concerns about new attendance zones  to the Savannah Chatham County School Board.

The new zones would impact students in Pooler and Port Wentworth.

School officials say they can't make everyone happy, but they have made some adjustments to the plan.

As for what exactly they have changed, that will be revealed on Dec. 18 when the final plans will be presented to the school board.

School officials held three public forums in November and people could even weigh in online. Most parents don't want their child to have to move schools but to address overcrowding; some student will have to move.

A K-8 school is already being built in Port Wentworth to help with overcrowding but school officials say that's not enough.

"The reality is, there is a major population boom in the western part of the county and we as a school district have to adjust to that," said Tammy Perkins, Executive Director of Support Services. "What was there five years ago was not there now and what's there now is not going to be there five years from now"
