SCPSS graduation rates up 15%

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Public School System announces their 2013 graduation rate is up 15 percent in just two years. Superintendent Dr. Thomas Lockamy says the school system now stands at a 69 percent.

The superintendent says one of the biggest reasons for the increase is their twilight program that was implemented two years ago. It's an evening program in all of their high schools where students can get credit for classes or retake classes.

Data gathering was also a big factor. Teachers are closely tracking student's progress and success.

"There are people who are doing a lot of good work. Our principals, teachers and councilors are going out and they are bringing students back in. They are also not only giving them the regular academic program but they are also accelerating them through our high school twilight program," said Dr. Lockamy.

The graduation rate in 2011 was 54 percent and now it's 69 percent. School officials say that's exactly where they want it.
