Coast Guard Air Station Savannah celebrates golden anniversary

A ceremony was held Thursday for the 50th Anniversary Celebration for the Coast Guard Air Station Savannah. The 50th celebration was held at 10 a.m. at Coast Guard Air Station in Savannah.

Since 1963, the Coast Guard men and women at Air Station Savannah have provided search and rescue coverage year-round 24/7 for 950 miles of shoreline from the northern border of South Carolina to Melbourne, FL.

"Savannah at the time we realized was the one of the best duty stations in the coast guard and I have used a few of them. And listening to the people here today, that tradition has continued and it makes me feel really good to be honest with you," said Carman Nichols, original Plank owner, Air Station Savannah.

"We call ourselves the low country life savers. We get great cases here. It's really neat to be that close to the community. People come up to me all the time about knowing someone who was rescued and it's an honor to work in a place your work amongst a bunch of heroes and the crews, the most exciting thing they do is to do a rescue and it's neat to watch and see that," said Cmdr. Greg Fuller, Air Station Savannah.
