Family dog in Fleming tests positive for rabies

Posted: Updated:
LIBERTY CO., GA (WTOC) -

A family dog in Fleming tested positive for rabies, and their household cat that may have been exposed to the virus is being sought by health officials.

The family of the dog, two adults and two children, are now getting preventative treatment for rabies, according to the Coastal Heath District. The rabies vaccinations were not current for their dog, according to the heath district's news release.

Liberty County Environmental Health officials urged caution on Thursday after a potentially rabid cat got away from the same home.

The owner told health officials that the predominately white cat was showing signs of aggression when it fled into the woods on Wednesday, near the home, which is located in the Cook Road area of Fleming.

Health officials are trying to find the cat. Anyone who sees the cat is urged to stay away from it and contact Liberty County Animal Control at 912.876.9191 or the Liberty County Health Dept. Environmental Health Division at 912.368.5520.

Liberty County Environmental Health officials are reminding residents that it's required by law for pets to be vaccinated for rabies.
