More than $15,000 in equipment stolen from construction site of new LISH Headquarters

LADY'S ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

In the Lowcountry, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is searching for suspects who stole more than $15,000 of construction equipment from the Lady's Island/St Helena Fire District.

The thefts occurred at the site of their new headquarters on Lady's Island Drive.

Following the construction theft, the Lady's Island/St Helena Fire District is beefing up security to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Surveillance cameras are just one of the many extra precautions the fire department is taking to protect its future home.

They've added security gates in addition to having more deputies and firefighters drop by to make sure no one trespasses.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office believes the thefts probably occurred sometime Tuesday and were discovered by the subcontractors Wednesday morning.

One of them noticed that a large amount of copper piping was missing.

The thieves apparently cut the piping out from where construction crews had set it in place in the building.

A second subcontractor claimed the lock to a company work trailer had been cut off and that several rolls of wiring, a hammer drill and extension cords were now gone.

Crews spent part of Thursday replacing the stolen pipes in the ceiling.
