Shootings prompt rally in Claxton

Two deadly shootings in a Claxton neighborhood have people looking for answers to stop what they see as a trend of violence.

On Oct. 17, investigators charged Levi Kennedy with the death of Elon Green. They stated the two were among several people at an all night party at a home on Church Street when an arguement began between the two.

On Dec. 2, Bryan Mobley was shot during an arguement at an acquaintance's home. Investigators have the accused shooter in custody on a probation violation but have yet to charge him in Mobley's death.

The two shootings occurred blocks from each other. The two deaths are part of what some call a rash of violence. Several church and community leaders organized a meeting to talk about the problem.

"We've got to realize in this time and age that what we do affects others. And what has happened in the past month and a half with these two shootings has affected the whole Claxton/Evans County community," noted Pastor Eddie Ball, one of the meeting's organizers.

One of the speakers will be Francis Johnson, state president of the NAACP.

"The NAACP, and me personally, are concerned with what we're seeing across Georgia and beyond. It seems to be an attitude of callousness from one person to another," Johnson told WTOC Thursday afternoon. "Conflict has been around since the beginning of man. But we hope we can find some alternative ways to solve it instead of gun violence."

"We are knocking on doors. Some say if we have to do picket signs and march up and down the streets screaming no more violence no more killings," said Ball. "So the community has been hurt by these two shootings but they are ready to react and just go forth and make Claxton and the Evans County a safer place to live"
