TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

A man was arrested after bringing a loaded gun to a City Council meeting on Tybee Island Thursday night.

Donald Cowart is facing charges for disorderly conduct and carrying a weapon at a public gathering.

City Manager Diane Schliecher said they always have an officer present at their meetings but since this incident, they will continue to make sure an officer is assigned to attend.

The mayor says they are also building a public safety building that they are now considering installing metal detectors.

"That's what we are going to be looking at, whether or not we are going to have that kind of technology,"said Mayor Jason Buelterman. "A metal detector before you come into the council chambers is something we will be looking at more seriously in light of what happened last night."

The city manager said that building will be finished by next fall and that's where they will begin having their City Council meetings.
