Ten unclaimed veterans buried at Beaufort National Cemetery

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

In the Lowcountry, ten unclaimed military veterans, dating as far back as the Cold War, were laid to rest Friday afternoon at the Beaufort National Cemetery.

In all, they served the country for more than 21 years.

This is the first military funeral in Beaufort for the Missing in Action Project.

It took more than a year's worth of tireless work for this day to come.

Members of the MIA Project, American Legion, Patriot Guard Riders and other Veteran Service organizations made sure these unclaimed veterans were gone but not forgotten.

For them, it didn't matter whether they knew them or not.

"The brotherhood never dies. Loyalty, honor and commitment," said Vietnam Veteran Joe Murray.

Ten urns—each containing an unclaimed veteran—made its way out of this hearse next to an American flag.

After being placed on this table, roses were draped on top of them.

Following a song and prayer, it was time to bring them to their final resting place.

"It's rewarding, it's rewarding because you know you brought these guys home to where they belong," said Larry Truax, who is part of the Missing in Action Project.

The group played a key role in making this a reality.

He said Friday was a happy day—a homecoming for all military brothers and sisters.

"If it was any part of your family, you would want them to have the honor and respect they deserve, since they don't have a family, we're their family," said Truax.

All of the urns were handcrafted by juveniles from the Department of Juvenile Justice program in Columbia.
