Good Samaritans pay off layaway purchases

Posted: Updated:

A lot of families are on a budget this holiday season, some using a layaway plan to buy presents.

Some parents shopping that way in Pembroke are getting a gift themselves.

Saturday afternoon, two local ladies arrived at the Alco store in Pembroke and paid off all children's items on layaway. The list included bikes, scooters, toys and tablets , which equaled roughly half of Alco's entire layaway inventory valued at $15,000 total.

The only condition the good Samaritans placed on their gesture was that they remain anonymous.

"They gave little information about themselves,'' said Alco store manager Lori Stairs. "They did say that they have seen a lot of random acts of kindness on the news and wanted to do something to help people in this community. They know a lot of people here are having financial problems or are out of work and they said they wanted to give back to the community.''

This ladies' kindness has affected between 50 and 100 families.

Most of them were not aware of the act until they approached the register and were told their purchases were paid in full. Stairs says many have been overwhelmed by emotion when they find out what someone has done for them.

"There have been a lot of mothers just crying and grateful and just shock, a lot of shock,'' said Stairs. " It was shocking for us to have someone come in and make that kind of offer.  It was a beautiful thing.''

Stair says there has been a pay-it-forward ripple effect the last couple of days at Alco as customers find out their bill has been paid.

She said many customers are taking the money they had in hand for their layaway purchases and doing something nice for someone else, even paying the bill for the person in line behind them.
