People rushing for lottery tickets

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

People in Savannah are scrambling to get lottery tickets for their chance to win $586 million dollars. If there isn't a winner Tuesday night, the winnings could roll into a billion dollars by Christmas.

The jackpot has been building since October and since then the prize has rolled over 21 times.

It only costs $1 to play, you can either choose your numbers or you let the computer choose for you.

Some lottery players were buying multiple tickets and doing a little of both, playing with quick pick numbers and choosing lucky numbers.

The last jackpot winner was in Maryland, winning $186 million but most lottery players are confident the winner is going to be from Georgia.

It's just days before Christmas and this is the biggest ticket item.

"That's a lot of money," said Sam Jenkins.

A prize that could turn a Christmas wish into a reality.

"With all that money, I think I would take me a trip," said Jenkins.

"A new truck for me," said Douglas Smalls.

Others are not so sure.

"First I'm going to take a little time off and think about it," said Roger Crupper.

It's not just people in Georgia and South Carolina who are dreaming big; forty two other states participate in the Mega Millions lottery.

Some people were buying as many as ten tickets to increase their odds.

For some, it's a Christmas wish that will keep on giving.

"I would donate most of it to charity and then just live comfortably the rest of my life and hopefully someone else will too," said Bradley Smith.

The drawing is Tuesday night at 11 p.m. If you have the winning numbers, you have 180 days to claim your winnings.
