Dozens of pigs seized from Greenville Co. home

PELZER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Dozens of squealing pigs were corralled into vans and taken to shelters in Greenville County Monday, after the pigs' owner was evicted from the home where they lived.

Jennifer James runs Happy Hooves, and was evicted last week from her home in Pelzer after her landlord said she had not paid rent in six months.

The landlord, Gerald Robinson, had no idea James was keeping more than 40 pigs on the property, he said.

"Disgusting, nasty," Robinson said of the home's condition. "I don't have nothing to say to them. It's just messed up how they left the property."

On Monday, Greenville County Animal Control rounded up the pigs and placed them in shelters, located at the Blackberry Valley landfill.

Robinson was none too pleased with the condition of the home. Pig feces were visible inside the home. James said she had planned all along to turn care of the pigs over to her friend, who she said was taking care of them after her eviction.

"We did not abandon (sic) the pigs. We put everything into those animals. We fell on hard times, but had a plan in place when we left and I had signed over the pigs to my friend who has been there everyday feeding and caring for them along with vet techs," James said in a statement to FOX Carolina Monday.

Animal Control said they will work with local shelters to find new homes for the animals. James said she will help with that as well.
