SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Children's Place and Special Care Nursery at St. Joseph's/Candler received new furniture, as well as toys and gaming systems, from the IKEA Distribution Center in Port Wentworth Tuesday afternoon.

Dean Peterson, Sustainability Coordinator for IKEA, presented the donation to Marianne Fields, Director of Women's and Children's Services and Med/Surg Services and Melanie Howard, Manager of the Children's Place.

Workers at the IKEA Distribution Center surveyed the Children's Place and the Special Care Nursery to see what was most needed after they chose St. Joseph's/Candler for a holiday donation project.

IKEA had previously donated 100 pillows to The Children's Place, and it saw the opportunity to do more.

Fariborz Zaer, MD, Chair of the Pediatrics Department at St. Joseph's/Candler said that making sure young patients get a chance to have fun and just enjoy being children is essential to the treatment process.

"We deeply appreciate this donation from IKEA," Zaer said. "These toys and games are really a part of the medicine that helps these children feel better."

The value of IKEA's Christmas donation totaled $6,000.
