SCCPSS approves 2014-15 school calendar changes

The Savannah-Chatham County school board is expected to approve next year's school calendar on Wednesday. 

Here's what the board is planning: The last day of school will be on May 22 instead of May 26 graduation will still be the first week of June; Sept. 26 will be a new holiday for staff and students for Rosh Hashanah; students will lose March 16 as a day off, the day before St. Patrick's Day. 

The school board has passed the date for the start of school to be Thursday, Aug. 7. The vote passed 7-2. See the calendar changes here.

Some highlights from the proposed calendar from an SCCPSS news release:

  • Includes 180 student days with 90 days per semester (will work with 4x4, A/B, or Traditional Schedules);
  • Marking periods separated at logical break points;
  • Recognizes all federal holidays except Columbus Day;
  • Fully aligns with the Georgia Dept. of Education testing windows;
  • Includes a staff planning day after the winter break /between Semester 1 and Semester 2;
  • Includes 4 pre-planning and three post planning days for teachers;
  • Includes a full 2-week Winter break;
  • Provides a 4 day fall-break for students in late September;
  • Provides a full week Spring Break in early April;
  • Supports High School athletic schedules and Military PCS windows
  • Aligns with the Savannah Civic Center availability for graduation exercises (not available May 25-31 due to SCAD commencement).  Graduations would occur June 1-5.
